Trailmaster Agenda: Wine Tour - Paso Robles

March 5 - 7, 2010
Trailmaster: Jeff Ellis

So, the 2010 Wine Run is schedule for March 5-7th. I have already made my reservations at the Wine Country RV park in Paso Robles. This is a quite new RV park, and is very nice. My reservation is in site #12. As you can see on the attached map, that is quite a ways away from Highway 46, which is a good thing. If you are planning on attending, I would strongly encourage you to make your reservations now, and try to get something in the same area that I am in. This park has full hookups and runs about average in terms of cost per night. It varies with what type of site you choose.

The run is going to be interesting, as there are now well over 200 wineries in the Paso Robles area. Of course, as much as we might like, we will not be able to taste at more than 3 or so. My plan is to try to stay away from the major labels, and visit some of the smaller, privately run wineries. From my experience, their wines are often times quite unique and are made with the art of wine making in mind. And, really, it is quite fun to taste some wines that are formed from a love of wine making. As mentioned, Saturday, March 6th we will caravan to a short list of wineries that I will have identified. We will spend the day tasting some of California ’s best wine. I am trying to arrange a BBQ at our final stop, but don’t know if that will work out. Your input regarding that concept would be helpful. My plan would be to have the winery make a small event for us to taste their wines and for them to provide a BBQ dinner. There, of course, would be a cost per person, so an accurate headcount would be necessary. My guess would be probably something not to exceed $25/person. If you are planning on attending, your thoughts are quite welcome. I will keep you updated on that progress, and the interest that is shown.

As well, Camille and I are planning on staying Sunday night. Which, for us, would leave the day open for visiting a number of other wineries. So, again, if you are planning on attending, it would be helpful to know your plans so that appropriate arrangements can be made.

And, finally, for those without RV’s, do not fret! There are a number of hotels in the area that range in price to fit virtually any budget. Wine Country RV is east on Highway 46. I believe there are a number of hotels very close on Highway 46 as well. My recommendation would be to choose one that is close to the RV park, so that we can socialize and not split the group up too much. Also, the RV park has a clubhouse where we could meet to organize events and to socialize. I hope to see you all there! And, although this will not be your typical 4WD run, I think it will prove to be quite fun and enjoyable for everyone. So, bring your jeep and it will count as a club run for the year! Look for more details over the next few weeks. I hope to hear from you soon.

Best regards,
Jeffrey Ellis
