About

Moab, UT is a widely recognized destination for gorgeous off-road trails. With hundreds of miles to choose from — ranging from easy scenic drives to hardcore terrain requiring nerves of steel — there is something for everyone. If you’re planning to join Aga and me for the trip, keep reading below for the details!

Lodging

• RV Parks: Sun Outdoors North Moab (allows travel trailers like ours), plus dozens of other options in the area.
• Camping: Plenty of local campgrounds available with no hookups (~$15–$20/night). Most are first-come, first-served.
• Hotels: Plenty of hotels in town for non-campers.

Drive

Drive time from Santa Cruz is roughly 16 hours. Here are three main options:

• I-80 East: through the Bay Area, Sacramento, and Salt Lake City, then head southeast to Moab.
• I-15 North: Take HWY 101 / I-5 toward Bakersfield, pick up I-15 through Las Vegas, and take I-70 East.
• HWY 50 (“The Loneliest Road in America”): The scenic, less-traveled route traversing Nevada. You can even grab a “HWY 50 Passport” to collect stamps along the way to prove you survived!

Permits

• BLM Land: General access is free. Sand Flats Recreation Area (Fins & Things, Hell’s Revenge) requires an entry fee ($10 / 7-day pass).
• Canyonlands National Park (White Rim, Potash entry into park): Standard National Park entrance fee or pass required.

Vehicle Requirements

• 4x4 with low range
• Good ground clearance

Recommended:

• Winch

Required Equipment

• Recovery strap
• Plenty of water (desert environment)
• Camping gear if joining White Rim overnight
